  3. next generation bioreactor for the controlled cultivation of cells

next generation bioreactor for the controlled cultivation of cells.

Cell therapy and regenerative medicine are very promising treatment approaches. We supported Scinus Cell Expansion in the development of a closed bioreactor system for the cultivation and clinical expansion of (stem)cells. The system operates with single-use bags for either adherent or suspension cell cultures. With this SCINUS bioreactor the costs of cell culture are significantly decreased and treatment as well as research get more accessible.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fully controlled bioreactor for cell cultivation
  • Single-use adherent and/or suspension cell culture bag
  • Integrated sensor technology to monitor pH, dissolved oxygen and pressure
  • Patented oxygenation system that perfuses the tubing with gases for cell growth

design and optimize a GMP compliant bioreactor.

For adequate controlled cell cultivation, a bioreactor is desired which can adjust the cell concentration, homogenize the culture and control temperature, DO and pH. Additional functions such as sampling and media exchange are a big advantage as well. Scinus Cell Expansion developed a device that uses single-use cell cultivation bags for adherent and suspension cell cultures. This works in combination with their patented (carb)oxygenator and the patented expansion and rocking system. Our role in this development project was to design and optimize a user-friendly and GMP compliant bioreactor which simplifies the cell culture and expansion within the single-use cultivation bags.

efficient cell cultivation and expansion.

The SCINUS bioreactor is a tabletop device for cell cultivation and expansion. It features a rocking platform for a stable culture environment, a roller system for volume control, and continuous perfusion for oxygen supply. The system operates stand-alone with a touchscreen and industry-standard software.

Efficient cell expansion requires precise control of temperature, DO, and pH, a uniform temperature distribution, and accurate gas regulation, along with an intuitive user interface.

combining system and user experience engineers

how we supported the development.

We designed and developed the complete bioreactor system based on the patented systems and experience of Scinus Cell Expansion. Together with the customer, our system and user experience engineers developed user-friendly and easy-to-use concepts for the overall process, the cabinets, the (carbo)oxygenator and the rocker platform. Based on that, a visual design language and a user interface concept was developed by our industrial design team.

Based on those concepts, our engineers designed a GMP compliant lab device and programmed a dashboard focused user interface. During extensive testing the system was further optimized, and it was made sure that the quality and performance targets are met. Air flow and heating were optimized to meet an evenly distributed temperature and advanced control techniques were used to maintain DO and pH levels at a constant level.
